Bokanmeldelse: Giftpillen av Øyvind Strømmen

En sen sommerkveld, juni 2016 satt jeg i en drosje i den rumenske byen Timisoara. Bilen så ikke akkurat ut som om den hadde vært EU-kontrollert på en stund, men raste avgårde i urovekkende fart.

Jeg kikket bekymret bak på guttungen min, som satt fastspent i drosjens eneste fungerende belte. Sjåføren var sint. Og jo sintere han ble, jo fortere kjørte han.

Det hele hadde startet med et uskyldig spørsmål. -Hvor kommer dere fra, da? hadde han spurt vennlig, på gebrokkent engelsk. Jeg hadde svart at vi kom fra Norge. Han stirret plutselig på meg, ikke veien. -Dere kommer fra landet med Barnevernet?! Det siste ordet ble uttalt med trykk, og med en tydelig t´ til slutt. Og så fikk jeg en hektisk historie om hvordan norske myndigheter angivelig systematisk kidnapper barn fra familier, fortrinnsvis øst-europeiske, for å gi dem til homofile nordmenn. Forsøkene mine på å klare opp gjorde ham bare sintere. Speedometernålen overbeviste meg til slutt om at det her var klokest å bare klappe igjen.

Øyvind Strømmen klapper ikke igjen. Heldigvis. Hans setter i sin siste bok søkelyset på fenomenet konspirasjonsteorier (skjønt forfatteren selv foretrekker det mer presise begrepet konspirasjonsanklager).

I folks bevissthet har konspirasjonsteorier i stor grad blitt underholdning, noe som også gjenspeiles i populærkulturen. Typisk eksemplifisert ved den gamle tv-klassikeren X-files! Slike fantasifulle historier kan gjerne først virke morsomme. Det er vanskelig å holde seg alvorlig når man hører at verdenseliten, inkludert dronning Elizabeth og Hillary Clinton (-selvsagt) egentlig er romøgler.

Strømmen viser i sin siste bok hvorfor dette slett ikke er noe latterlig fenomen. Det er farlig, langt utover sinte drosjesjåfører.

De mange kreative forsøkene på å forklare eller plassere skyld for de siste årenes pandemi kan lett gi et inntrykk av at konspirasjonssnakk er noe moderne. Strømmen viser derimot hvordan dette til alle tider synes å ha vært en del av den menneskelige bevisshet. Og hvordan dette historisk har hatt katastrofale konsekvenser. Konspirasjonsanklager var som kjent sentrale både i forbindelse med fjorårets storming av den amerikanske kongressbygningen og de tidligere 22.juli-drapene her i Norge. Holocaust er trolig historiens største skrekkeksempel. Forfatteren setter også hekseprossesene i Salem og ikke minst Finnmark inn i en konspirasjonskontekst. Men selv om dette fenomenet synes å ha vært med oss til alle tider, tyder forskning på at det finnes perioder med økt konspiasjonssnakk. Det oppstår gjerne i forbindelse med kriser; terrorangrep, epidemier, krig, massearbeidsløshet. Felles for disse periodene synes å være en allmenn økt opplevelse av frykt og usikkerhet.  

En populær forklaring på konspirasjonsforestillinger er den menneskelige tilbøyelighet til å se mønstre. Andre avfeier det raskt som paranoia. Forfatteren går bak dette, og trekker frem et sitat fra den amerikanske historikeren Richard J. Hofstadter. Sistnevnte presiserer at hans bruk av begrepet i denne sammenheng nettopp ikke er ment som noen medisinsk diagnose. Dette ettersom det vil ha liten relevans for samtiden eller historisk verdi hvis det bare benyttes [for å beskrive] menn som er genuint forstyrrede. Ifølge Hofstadter ligger det interessante i at paranoiaen til tider uttrykkes av mer eller mindre vanlige mennesker. Og som Strømmen sier: Det er også når dette skjer at varsellampene bør begynne å blinke for alvor.

Han viser hvordan denne type tankegang finner næring i usikre tider. Den samvirker med folks følelse av avmakt og frykt i en gjensidig forverring av situasjonen. Konspirasjonssbeskyldninger ødelegger samfunnsdebatten. Som alle andre offentlige institusjoner bør det være mulig å føre en debatt om barnevernet. Og på lik linje med alle andre bransjer bør det kunne være mulig å diskutere uheldige sider ved legemiddelindustrien. Men, så lenge ville beskyldninger om menneskehandel i barnevernet og mikrochipper i vaksiner florerer, vil seriøse aktører med helt legitime bekymringer gjerne vegre seg for å lufte dem offentlig. Frykten for å bli slått i hartkorn med konspirasjonsteoretikerne er for stor. Den er dessverre velbegrunnet. Viktige tema blir med dette trengt ut av den offentlige debatt, noe som åpenbart er et demokratisk problem.

Det er ikke vanskelig å være enig i at konspirasjonsteorier må møtes med fakta og kildekritikk. Forfatteren foreslår likevel at det mest effektive er å gjøre noe med kjerneårsakene: frykt, usikkerhet og avmaktsfølelse. Avslutningsvis stiller han spørsmålene:

Hvordan skal vi motvirke tendensen til at folkevalgte, medier og akademikere plasseres i en «dem»-kategori langt unna «vi»-kategorien? Hva kan vi gjøre for å snu fremtidspessimisme til fremtidstro? Hvordan kan vi sørge for at færre mennesker opplever en mangel på kontroll over egne liv? Hvordan kan vi motvirke følelsen av fremmedgjøring?

Det er ved å søke svar på disse spørsmålene vi kan motvirke konspirasjonsteorienes ødeleggende kraft.Strømmen skriver godt. Boken er lettlest, poengtert og ryddig, både i form og innhold. Forfatteren tilbyr nye perspektiver på emnet, illustrert med interessante eksempler. Måtte den leses av både «fritenkere» og folkevalgte!
