Grunnleggende menneskerettigheter er universelle

Derfor kan vi aldri godta at de må vike i møte med tradisjon, kultur eller tro.

Svært mange tar dette på like stort alvor som mine egne lærere gjorde. Mange andre vrir seg og blir underlig vage. Noen ganger blir det helt taust i den andre enden.

Og vi vet jo hvorfor. Men læren om holocaust må bankes inn, ikke bare på videregående, men i grunnskolen. Det må være pensum. Det er livsfarlig å late som om det store antallet muslimske barn og ungdommer i klasserommene er helt uproblematisk i denne sammenhengen, slik mange nå velger å gjøre. Det er vanskelig å røre ved dette i dagens opphetede situasjon, men det er ingen vei utenom.

Det er norsk skole som skal lære barna hva som skjedde i leirene under det nazistiske vanviddet, ikke foreldrene. Samme hvor de kommer fra. Samme hva slags religion de praktiserer.»

I de snart ti årene siden denne kronikken av Ingvar Ambjørnsen stod på trykk har jeg ofte tenkt tilbake på disse ordene. Den var opprinnelig publisert i Dagsavisen, men virker nå å være fjernet derfra. De som vil lese hele kan finne den her:

I løpet av tiden som har gått siden jeg først leste den har jeg selv rukket å arbeide flere år på integreringsfeltet, via stiftelsen Født Fri, som har vært mye omtalt den senere tiden. Der kom jeg i kontakt med mange foreldre og ansatte i skoleverket som gav uttrykk for bekymring for hvilke holdninger de ble vitne til.

Skoleelever som aktivt og aggressivt forsvarte terrorangrepet på Charlie Hebdo og drapet på læreren Samuel Paty, hvis eneste overtramp var å vise frem tegningene fra Charlie Hebdo i forbindelse med undervisning om ytringsfrihet. Mens barn helt ned i barnehagealder ropte «haram!» og pekte når de så to jenter holde hender. Så vel som utøvelse av streng negativ sosial kontroll internt mellom barn og ungdommer når det gjelder kosthold, bekledning og hvem man kan omgås.

Beretninger som ble understøttet av den omfattende Fafo-rapporten Migrasjon, foreldreskap og sosial kontroll, som Født Fri kommenterte ved lanseringen.

Et av tiltakene vi i Født Fri forsøkte å etablere for å motvirke denne type holdninger var Stovnerrevyen, hvor formålet var å gi barn og unge verktøyene de trenger for å kunne bearbeide og analysere holdninger og strømninger i dem selv, og deres egne oppvekstmiljø. I den forbindelse ble vi også smertelig klar over hvilke krefter som iherdig forsøkte å stanse eller mistenkeliggjøre denne type holdningsendrende arbeid rettet mot ungdom.

Den siste uken har en av landets mest debatterte saker omhandlet den mannlige eleven som nektet å håndhilse på sin kvinnelige rektor, og trakk tilbake hånden mens det ble ropt «haram!» fra salen. Det kan kanskje virke som en bagatell, ikke verdt å bruke energi på, men årsaken til at hendelsen vekker så sterke reaksjoner går nettopp på de dypere holdningsproblem dette menneskesynet representerer.

Handlinger springer ut fra holdninger, og holdninger oppstår ikke i et vakuum. Det er nytteløst å forstå hva som drev Breivik og Manshaus til å begå sine ugjerninger, dersom man ikke er villig til å sette seg inn i tankeuniverset som formet dem. Uten denne forståelsen kan man heller ikke forebygge og forhindre at andre følger i deres fotspor.

Samme prinsipp må også anvendes når terroren, og holdningene som motiverte den, stammer fra andre kilder enn høyreekstreme miljø. Juni er Pride-måneden, hvor det er vanskelig å ikke påminnes fjorårets angrep på markeringen. Zaniar Matapour, som stod bak angrepet, var en del av kretsen rundt islamisten Arfan Bhatti. Bhatti publiserte kort tid i forkant et bilde på sin Facebook-profil av et påtent Pride-flagg på Facebook, akkompagnert av oppfordringer til å begå drap på homofile.

I år ble tre tilhengere av den Islamske Stat (IS) som planla terrorangrep på Pride-paraden stanset av politiet i Østerrike.

Det går en rød tråd fra barnehagebarna som roper «haram!» når de ser et likekjønnet par leie hverandre, til de som begår, eller forsøker å begå terrorangrep rettet mot det skeive miljøet. Det er selvfølgelig viktig å understreke at det er en betydelig avstand mellom de som «bare» nærer fordomsfulle holdninger, og de som anvender vold og terror som virkemiddel.

Men i begge tilfeller er det de samme fordommene som ligger til grunn, og begge deler representerer på hvert sitt vis samfunnsproblem vi må ta på alvor. Vi får imidlertid aldri tatt noe oppgjør med disse fordommene dersom vi ikke kan snakke åpent og ærlig om hvor de har sitt opphav.

Som samfunn har vi en plikt til å imøtegå enhver type holdning som tilsier at noen mennesker er mindre verdt enn andre, basert på kjønn, legning eller etnisitet. Det utgjør en vesentlig utfordring å håndtere slike holdninger når de er rotfestet i kultur, tradisjon eller religion – faktorer mange opplever som helt avgjørende deler av sin identitet og personlighet. Vi kan imidlertid aldri la hensyn til noens tro eller overbevisning komme i veien for å forsvare universelle menneskerettigheter, eller unnlate å være konsekvente i møte med ulike konservative patriarkalske miljø.

Det representerer derimot en dobbelt utfordring i å konfrontere slike holdninger i tilfeller relatert til minoritetsmiljø. Denne problematikken drives frem i hovedsak fra det man løselig kan kalle aktivister som anser seg selv for å være en del av den progressive venstresiden. Disse har som grunnholdning å ville ta parti med en minoritet i møte med majoriteten, noe som langt på vei taler til deres fordel. De har vært pådrivere for mange helt nødvendige positive fremskritt i samfunnet, når det gjelder mangfold og aksept for å skille seg ut fra mengden.

Disse aktivistene havner dessverre i en identitetspolitisk spagat i saker hvor forskjellsbehandling og fordommer forekommer på tvers av ulike minoriteter eller historisk sett diskriminerte grupper. Der man tidligere har vært en kompromissløs forsvarer av likestilling, argumenterer nå mange fra aktivistholdt for at retten til å utøve kvinnediskriminering motivert av konservativ religionsutøvelse må ta forrang. Mange eks-muslimer opplever også at denne gruppen, som burde ha omfavnet dem, virker mer opptatt av å utvise forståelse for de religiøse, ofte høyreorienterte, miljøene som har undertrykket og utstøtt dem.

Deeyah Khan, den kanskje mest fornuftige stemmen man kan velge å lytte til i disse spørsmålene har ved flere anledninger fremhevet mentaliteten hun mener ligger bak:

«- Av en eller annen grunn svarer ikke vestlige samfunn med samme robuste respons når det dreier seg om vold mot minoritetskvinner, som de gjør hvis kvinnene er hvite. Det er et trist faktum, sier Deeyah.

Hun tror hun vet hvorfor.

– Mange har gode intensjoner, og vil respektere folk fra ulike bakgrunner og kulturer. Det er jeg så hjertens enig i. Men menneskerettigheter og menneskelig verdighet er universelt, det er ikke et vestlig konsept, og det kan ikke bare gjelde for hvite og vestlige.

Hun tror mange, kanskje særlig på venstresiden, frykter å snakke om æresdrap og om vold mot minoritetskvinner.

– De frykter at de vil bli sett på som rasister hvis de gir seg i kast med dette. Men faktum er at det er nettopp det som er rasisme! Å si at kvinner som ser sånn ut eller tilhører den gruppen ikke har samme rettigheter som andre, det er rasistisk. Å gå på tå hev. Det er rasistisk, slår Deeyah fast.»

Både ved tilfellet Stovnerrevyen og den pågående håndhilsnings-debatten ser vi at representanter for dette segmentet gjør seg til menneskelige skjold som skjermer retten til å drive religiøst eller kulturelt begrunnet diskriminering. I begge saker tas også forholdsvis nedrige virkemiddel i bruk, i form av at man forsøker å trekke motivene til oss som prinsippfast forsvarer likestilling i tvil. Og mer enn antyder at det egentlig er rasisme, fremmedfiendtlighet og islamofobi som driver oss.

Jeg kjenner allerede nå at dette er en tekst det koster litt å skrive, mens den egentlig burde vært fullstendig ukontroversiell. Alt jeg argumenterer for er at ingen bør utsettes for hat, fordommer, forfølgelse, forskjellsbehandling, vold eller terror basert på hvordan de ser ut eller hvem de velger å elske. Alt jeg appellerer for er at vi må være 100% konsekvente i måten vi forsvarer de mest grunnleggende menneskerettighetene samfunnet vårt er tuftet på. Alt jeg ønsker er at alle typer konservativ mørkemanns-mentalitet skal møtes på samme vis, uavhengig av hvilken trosretning mørkemennene bekjenner seg til.

Hadde jeg skrevet en identisk tekst som ensidig rettet kritikk mot høyreradikale miljø, fordømte handlingene til Breivik og Manshaus, og irettesatte Fremskrittspartiet for å ikke ta et tydelig nok oppgjør med holdningene som oppstår i deres omegn, ville det bli mottatt med nær unison hyllest fra mange av dem som nok nå vil mene det jeg skriver i denne teksten er problematisk.

Men slik kan vi ikke godta at det skal være, og derfor må vi fortsette å argumentere for et verdisett som har gitt oss et av klodens og historiens mest likestilte, velfungerende og vellykkede samfunn.
