Verdensmesterskap i rettighetsbrudd

Sommeren 1986 var jeg seks år, og fulgte mitt første VM. Omstendighetene ville ha det til at valget av favorittlag hadde falt på Tyskland, som tok seg til finalen det året. Det ble bare sølv, men gnisten var tent, og da de hentet hjem pokalen i påfølgende VM i 1990 var en livslang kjærlighetshistorie født.

Siden da har jeg fulgt hvert eneste VM med stor entusiasme. Da jeg fra Kontraskjæret i Oslo så Tyskland igjen ta gull en sommerkveld i 2014 betraktet jeg det som en av livets største øyeblikk. En helt ubeskrivelig følelse, understreket av at det var gått 24 år siden sist gang det skjedde.

I år faller det seg slik at min egen sønn er 6 år gammel. Men istedetfor at han danner seg sine egne minner av en slik første sommerforelskelse med fotball, ble det ingen VM-fest på Kontraskjæret. Årets VM er nemlig ikke bare flyttet bort fra sommervarmen til vinterkulden, men også geografisk og moralsk til langt mindre attraktive trakter.

At Qatar ble tildelt VM er i seg selv en hendelse preget av mange tvilsomme omstendigheter, hvor anklagene om omfattende korrupsjon nok har mer enn et snev av sannhet ved seg. For land som Qatar er det å tilrane seg denne type gigant-arrangement del av et utstrakt PR-prosjekt.

En form for det som kalles sportsvasking, hvor hensikten er å lede oppmerksomheten bort fra regimets brudd på grunnleggende menneskerettigheter, noe det ikke er mangel på i tilfellet årets VM-arrangør. At VMet i seg selv ble muliggjort gjennom utnyttelsen av fremmedarbeidere som var underlagt nærmest slavelignende forhold bare forverrer et allerede miserabelt inntrykk.

Vi har sett hva det fører til når vi utviser vilje til å gå på kompromiss med grunnleggende menneskerettigheter til fordel for å tilfredsstille trangen til å følge et idrettsarrangement. Det gir autoritære stater mulighet til å dekke over urettene de begår, og gir dem selvtilliten de trenger til å forsterke sine mest negative impulser. At Russland fikk gjennomføre forrige VM uten større reaksjoner, på tross av deres annektering av Krim fire år tidligere, kan ha vært med på å styrke Putins tro på at verden ville godta at han underla seg hele Ukraina.

Også ekte kjærlighet kan kjølne, og forhold kan ta slutt. Jeg slår nok ikke opp med fotballen som helhet, men tar en pause fra alt assosiert med den frem til dette skammens mesterskap er overstått.
