Det er umulig å ikke bli preget av scenene vi har vært vitne til i vårt naboland den siste uken, hvor deler av fredelige Sverige forvandles til noe som minner om en ren krigssone.

Hvor politibetjenter som ikke gjør annet enn å utføre jobben samfunnet har satt dem til å gjøre blir utsatt for voldelige angrep, egnet til å sette liv og helse i fare.

Den utløsende faktoren for opptøyene har vært at den ytterliggående danske politikeren Rasmus Paludan gjennomfører sine stunt, som nettopp har til hensikt å vekke mest mulig raseri hos dem han forsøker å provosere, nemlig landets muslimer. For Paludan og hans støttespillere har dette vært en større suksesshistorie enn de nok i sine villeste fantasier kunne forestille seg.

Uavhengig av hva man måtte mene om Paludan, og det faktum at han gjør sitt ytterste for å fremprovosere denne type reaksjoner, så kan man aldri forsvare det å bruke vold som virkemiddel. Åpner vi først den døren, hvor vi holder ofrene for voldshandlinger ansvarlig, begynner vi å bevege oss ned en sti som ikke vi lede oss som samfunn til noe godt.

Og det er selvfølgelig overhodet ingenting som kan rettferdiggjøre at man retter vreden mot den svenske ordensmakten, eller lokalsamfunn som ikke på noe vis kan holdes medansvarlig for de fornærmelser enkelte føler seg utsatt for.

Det grunnleggende premisset for hvordan man skal betrakte den situasjon som har oppstått må være at man innser hvilken sentral del av grunnmuren i et fritt demokratisk samfunn ytringsfrihet utgjør. Da så mange av de andre rettighetene vi alle nyter godt av springer ut av den. Dette gjelder i aller høyeste grad også for de troende. For én religions hellige tekster kan gjerne oppleves som ren blasfemi og i høyeste grad en krenkelse, sett fra ståstedet til tilhengerne av en annen trosretning. Slik er ytringsfriheten den ultimate garantist for alles religionsfrihet.

Deri ligger at man også må godta at det vil finnes dem som bruker sin ytringsfrihet til å utøve religionskritikk. Og ikke alle som gjør det vil velge en saklig, konstruktiv eller dialogorientert formidlingsmåte. Det vil helt klart også finnes dem som egentlig nærer hatefulle holdninger mot folkegrupper, og velger å maskere det som religionskritikk. Men ytringsfriheten er slik innrettet at den ikke er ment å stille seg til moralsk dommer over hvilke ytringer som er forsvarlige eller ikke. Den har kun til funksjon å forsvare retten til å formidle ytringer.

Religionskritikk er da også en form for maktkritikk, og en helt essensiell del av det som har skapt likestilte og mangfoldige samfunn i de vestlige demokratiene. Vår tilnærming til å møte religiøse mørkemenn med humor, satire og regelrett hån har vært med på å drive holdningene de representerer på vikende front. Og åpnet døren for rettighetskampene til kvinner, homofile og andre minoriteter.

Vi kan aldri la de mest konservative religiøse få bestemme rammene for hva man skal kunne si eller mene, basert på hva som sårer deres følelser, eller for dem oppleves som en krenkelse av deres personlige tro.
